Digitalis Intoxication: Report of 10 Cases

Abstract
Ten cases of digitalis intoxication. encountered during the routine medical practice in the Department of Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital for the last one year, are reported. This report includes only
those cases, which developed toxic symptoms and cardiac arrhythmias after the administration of the average recommened doses or more of digitalis preparations. In each case, the administered preparationand dosage of digitalis, cause of intoxication, underlying disease, subjective symptoms of toxicity, electrocardiographic findings, and consequence are analyzed. Preparations of digoxin were given in 7 cases, digitalis leaf in 2, and digitoxin in 1. Six cases were given larger amounts of digitalis than the usual recommended doses.
The most common types or cardiac lesions associated with toxicity were rheumatic valvular diseases (in4 cases) and hypertensive heart diseases (in 3 cases).Common symptoms of intoxication were nausea, anorexia, palpitation and vertigo. Electro cardiograms showed ventricular premature beats in big eminal formor in forms of multiple foci(5 cases), paroxysmal atrial tachycardia with or without block (2 cases) and various degrees of atrioventricular conduction defect. Seven cases recovered with conservative treatment and 3 cases took downhill courses after the onset oftoxic symptoms and signs.
